Editorial Policy
This policy explains how ScoutSort selects, tests, rates and updates the products we cover — and how we keep our coverage independent.
How we select products
We choose what to review based on reader demand and market relevance — the products people are actually searching for and buying. We identify candidates through search-trend research, reader requests, retailer best-seller data and category expertise. Brands cannot pay to be included or excluded.
Our review process
Each product is assigned to the editor who specialises in that category. We buy or borrow the unit, test it hands-on against a consistent set of criteria, and compare it directly with competing products. Testing periods range from several days to several weeks depending on the category. We document our methodology in each article.
Our rating methodology
Products receive a ScoutSort Score out of 5, derived from weighted criteria specific to each category — for example comfort, adjustability, build quality and value for office chairs, or sound, noise cancellation, comfort and value for earbuds. Scores reflect measured and observed performance only. We re-score products when we re-test them, and the score shown is always the most recent.
Conflict of interest policy
Editorial decisions are made independently of our commercial relationships. ScoutSort earns affiliate commissions when readers purchase through some of our links, but commissions never influence which products we recommend, how we rank them, or the scores we assign. Editors do not accept payment, gifts or other incentives from brands in exchange for coverage, and any product retained after testing is disclosed and does not affect its rating.
Accuracy and corrections
We strive for accuracy and update articles as products, prices and our testing evolve. Every article shows its publish date and last-updated date. If you spot an error, email contact@scoutsort.com and we will review and correct it promptly.
Use of sources and AI
Our recommendations are based on first-hand testing and the expertise of our editors. Where we cite manufacturer specifications or third-party data, we verify them. Any tools we use to assist research or drafting are subject to human review and editing by the named author, who is responsible for the final article.
