A standing desk only helps if you actually use it — and you'll only use it if it's stable, quiet and quick to adjust. We assembled 14 electric desks, loaded them with monitors and gear, and measured wobble at standing height.

The headline: dual-motor desks with a crossbar or thick legs stay steady where single-motor budget desks shake. Here's how the field shook out — literally.

How we tested

We assembled each desk to manufacturer spec, loaded it with two 27" monitors plus a laptop and peripherals, and rated front-to-back and side-to-side wobble at the highest setting most adults use. We also timed full travel range and measured motor noise.

Why stability is everything

Wobble is the number-one reason people abandon standing desks. A desk that shakes when you type at standing height feels cheap and distracting. Look for dual motors, a wide foot, thicker legs, and ideally a crossbar — each meaningfully cuts movement.

Features worth paying for

  • Dual motors for smoother, quieter, more stable travel.
  • Programmable height presets so switching between sit and stand is one tap.
  • A generous height range — check the minimum if you're shorter and the maximum if you're tall.
  • A solid warranty (Uplift and Jarvis offer some of the longest in the category).

How to use a standing desk without overdoing it

Don't stand all day — alternate. A common starting rhythm is roughly 30 minutes standing for every hour or so of sitting, adjusting to comfort. Add an anti-fatigue mat and supportive shoes, and ease in over a couple of weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Single or dual motor?+

Dual-motor desks are quieter, faster and noticeably more stable. Unless budget is very tight, choose dual.

What desktop size should I get?+

48" suits most single-monitor setups; 60" gives room for dual monitors and paperwork. Make sure your floor space allows the depth.

Are standing desks worth it?+

For people who sit all day, the ability to change posture through the day is genuinely valuable — provided you actually alternate rather than stand rigidly.
